Located at Pointe de Grave, France, at the mouth of the Gironde River. This stupendous monument marked the site from which Lafayette departed for America in 1777 and near where first American Doughboys landed in 1917. It was destroyed by the Nazi's in the Second World War and later replaced by the smaller marker.
The original "lighthouse" monument, as seen in the 1942 picture, was rather...shall I say grotesque....the sentiment was nice.....perhaps the German commander was an artist.
ReplyDeleteIt was an art deco - moderns' rendition of the 'light of liberty', done for an earlier generation in America as a NY statue... Germany tore it down because it was rewriting history for the 1,000 year reich.
